This is one of the first Ernest Borel watches created indicated by the Borel & Courvoisier signature and I believe dates the piece the the mid 1860's. Ernest Borel has an interesting pedigree, but one thing for sure, Borel was a genius watchmaker and contributed very much to the development of pocket watches, especially if high grade, like this one. Also, it should be noted, that the first workshop was in Neuchatel, an area of Switzerland where many of the great watchmakers manufactured their watches. Borel was right in the center of it all. This size 18s movement be beyond it's age. The watch features a sterling silver case (heavy), completely in-house hand made manufactured movement, with a difficult configuration, but one that allows to obtain chronometer grade specifications. The movement is one of the most well made, decorated and finished of most any high-end comparable movement of its era. The white porcelain dial appears perfect, I cannot find any hairlines, cracks, chips or repairs. The hands are original. The case is heavy duty and all hinged snap together tightly. The watch is key would and hand set. This is a very rare pocket watch.
