Illinois never ceases to impress me with their private label Burlington Pocket Watch line. This pocket watch is very high grade, higher than most Illinois branded railroad watches. The finishing of the movement is superb as well as the design with beautiful decoration on the bridges and plates. We see high-end element like screwed in gold set jewels and gold wheels. It's tough to find railroad watches that are not 3/4 plate - which in my opinion, can be boring to look at sometimes. The full Montgomery dial is perfect with no major or minor flaws seen or noted. The face feature stunning breguet hands and sunken center and seconds. This is a very nice looking dial. The movement is just serviced and running strong keeping great time. The reverse of the case-back as a fantastic deco style engraving with enameling. This is very hard to find and a welcoming engraving to help establish provenance and to help establish a genuine case, as there are so many fake cases on the market these days; none of which have personal engravings. The engraving is appealing to the eye, I cannot quite determine the initials, nonetheless; it's great looking and would have been expensive to create during this era. The inside case-back is properly hallmarked. The only notable flaw with this watch is the original glass crystal has some light superficial scratches around the center, as well as a tiny chip on the inside; none of this is very noticeable; however, I feel like they should be disclosed. There are also a few tiny dents on the case back, they look much more pronounced in the photos than they actually are and I do not consider it a flaw. Overall this is an excellent example of a high grade 21 jewel Burlington (made by Illinois) railroad watch; and quite rare I might add with only 88,000 made. Anything below 100,000 is scarce and hard to find. Don't forget, many estimate that only 20-30% of antique pocket watches still exist due to gold scrapping over the years. With railroad watches being so popular and in demand, this is why you need to be careful what you purchase because people are taking movements that were kept after the case was scrapped and putting them in new reproductions made in China. Well, this is certainly not the case with any of our fine pocket watches since they are expertly curated and vetted, but buyers beware, especially on well known auction sites. Anyhow, I've rambled and went off topic. This is an awesome watch for a personal purchase, gift or to add to an important pocket watch collection. Thank you.
