On a rarity factor on a scale from 1-10 as I often commentate on rarer items, these are a 10. Made by Torrini in 1800's antiquity Florence, Italy; these pieces appear to be the first iteration of the illusive Mens Button Cover. An idea bloomed from the Torrini family themselves. Torrini Manifattura Orafa is a family goldsmith artisan business that has its roots all the way back to the 15th century. In fact, some will argue, they were and still are the finest handcrafted goldsmith in the world, and they have a fantastic museum of their early work right in Florence. Although not all records are available, we know they were commissioned and worked with the brightest artists in Italy on very important projects, like the baptismal font in the Baptistry of nearby Siena. Although these button covers were a newer concept of antiquity, different than cufflinks but serve a similar purpose, they seem to have been produced in extremely small quantities by hand at the Torrini workshop. Many antiquity specialists including myself, believe that these were difficult to make, thereby expensive and reserved for highly respected figures, even the Pontiff himself (that is speculation). Properly hallmarked with both the old Torrini Family Hallmark and .750 in gold purity. Now, here is the most awesome thing about these button covers. They are done in blended tri-gold. Something that is very difficult to accomplish by hand. We have yellow, rose (somewhat pink) and white with a maze decoration. They weigh approximately 7 grams and are 15mm in diameter. They are solid gold. Please note that I've tried these on several buttons and they fit on most but not all; so please keep that in mind. Some, like the Gap and Banana Republic uses slightly larger shirt buttons that others do not, this is one example of when they may not fit; However, I'm sure you will be pleased to wear them on all your dress shirts that are standard sized buttons. In one of my pictures, you can see the cover over the button which has already closed up the sleeve. These really cannot disappoint, they are stunning, historical, and at a very attractive price.
