The Hamilton Hastings was available in yellow or white solid or gold filled. This watch is white gold filled and was sold in the $70 range starting in 1928. There are a couple facts that makes this watch a significant piece. First is the dial; the Hastings was available with painted lume numerals with military style hands. But when you look at this Hastings, that is not the case. This is an extremely rare variation (a couple other variations are known to exist) with applied 18k gold numerals and deco style steel blue hands. Research tells us that this variation was not cataloged; however, the Hamilton Chronicles (known to be an expert resource) explains this dial and why it was made. Furthermore, it seems there were only a few made. Here is the link: http://www.hamiltonchronicles.com/2012/11/1928-hastings.html
Moving on to Provenance. The case-back is engraved Frank A Whipple. It appears that Frank was part of the famous Whipple family who were some of the first people to settle in colonial America. The Whipple family not only settled here, but there are relatives to the family who actually sailed on the Mayflower. A Whipple, William Whipple, Jr. was even a signatory of the United States of America Declaration of Independence. Frank, who is engraved on this watch is believed to be the Frank A. Whipple who settled in Hartford, CT and appears to have lived most of his life there. We are almost sure of this as the watch came out of an estate in Hartford, CT. The Whipple family is an extremely important family, some of the first to settle in America from England. Should you wish, you can learn much more about the Whipple family at http://www.whipple.org .
