Vintage 1872-1874 Rare Washington Watch Co. Chronometer Grade Pocket Watch 18s
This a very rare, post civil war, Washington Watch Co. lever set size 18s encased in a nickel screw down back and bezel. There is little known about the original Washington Watch Company except they produced handmade, mostly nickel cased, high quality pocket watches for a short period of about 2-3 years operating out of Washington DC. This watch is named the "Senate" . Many collectors believe that company catered to politicians and foreign dignitaries. It is likely that this was a very small watch company who's owners merged or were bought by a larger company; although it is not documented from what I can find, many collectors believe the company was purchased by Illinois Watch Co. and sold as private label. This is a 17j adjusted movement with an Illinois manufactured case - they sold their cases to many companies. The dial is a white porcelain montgomery dial with very attractive roman numerals and original hands. There is no evidence of any hairlines or cracks on the dial. Overall this is a very rare pocket watch in excellent antique original condition. Just serviced and keeping good time.
