This Vacheron Constantin from 1974 is absolutely stunning in solid 18k white gold and a near flawless original extremely rare (10/10 in rarity) black dial with no indices, with white gold dauphine hands. Gentlemen, this is a watch that would be the best looking formal wear watch I've ever laid eyes on. If you have a black tie event, wedding, formal business event, this watch will be stunning. It is subtly beautiful and striking. No other watch I've seen will stand up to this as far as formalities go. The 1960s and 70s brought about some very modernistic pieces. In fact what does this remind you of? Yes, the original Museum Watch commissioned by Nathan George Horwitt originally made by Vacheron but later used and heavily marketed by Movado. Of course, the iconic dot would be the only thing on the dial - so this is not the Museum Watch, but it's quite reminiscent. So what is this watch then I asked; I cannot find another example for sale on the web. Well, Vacheron often made custom orders or very tiny productions of a certain style. I was able to track through Vacheron's very kind search of the archives service that the movement, case and dial belong together. Although Vacheron doesn't guarantee authenticity unless you send them the watch and pay their expensive fee; but really, show me one fake that can turn out a copy of the 1003, possibly the most difficult and significant movements ever; with the perfect finish to every edge. This is certainly the works of the house of Vacheron Constantin. Furthermore, this was purchased from an estate of the original owner and I was able to verify that this is an original Vacheron design. In fact, the previous owner had several fine watches; and held this watch in the highest regard for its rarity and simple beauty. Everything about the watch appears original and is being guaranteed to be. Unfortunately, you could search for hours and not even find one example on the internet of the 33003 Black Dial at this time. The watch is 33MM in diameter, has it's original crown, strap and buckle (acerinox) as it was when it was purchased according to the estate and from what I can gather from Vacheron in Switzerland. This watch is running well and keeping good time. It appears to have been serviced recently as the movement is very clean and the oils are still good. The dial and glass crystal are perfect.
The caliber 1003 was originally conceived by JLC as Cal 803 on request from Vacheron and AP. No one else, not even Jaeger-LeCoultre has used this movement. VC named it Cal 1003 and AP Cal 2003. First introduced by VC in 1955, and still the thinnest movement produced to this date at 1.64 mm high and diam 20.80 mm. The 1003 is chronometer quality and it has no shock proofing, because it's so light. It's really one of a hand full of horological accomplishments of all time. Most people don;t realize that a true ultra-thin such as this, is more difficult, expensive and exclusive that most other highly complicated watches. Vacheron models containing the cal. 1003 today sell for over $20k. Going vintage is a real bargain.
This watch with cal 1003 is still made today as Vacheron Constantin ref 33155; of coarse with some changes such as size and movement finish and retails for $29,600.
