Excellent Railroad Grade Hamilton Pocket Watch Size 18s 21 Jewels cal. 940 ca. 1901
Around the time of the turn of the century, many smaller rail companies still used a wide variety of railroad watches, not yet adopting standards. This period brought us excellent railroad watches made to compete with standards in many different ways. Take this watch for example; it is a size 18s, slightly larger than the standard 16s. These larger pieces did very well for a couple of reasons. The size of the movement is larger; which means every gear etc. is larger. This not only results in a slightly bigger case for men with larger hands; but usually a more accurate watch as well. They are typically easier to service and have better range of regulation. We love this 18s Hamilton because it's powered by a high grade, well decorated & finished railroad approved movement. This is all housed within a hefty no-tarnish silveroid case with its original thick glass crystal. Please note small rim chips in the gass of the original crystal. This is to be expected of an original crystal of this age. The dial on this watch is near perfect with only a small chip right where the lever is - you cannot see it with the cover on; otherwise the dial is perfect and striking. It's not a stretch to say that this is a very well finished movement, itlooks like no expense spared on this one. The back cover is threaded, so you do not need anything to pry it open with like most. There is a stunning factory engraving of a stag on the back cover - no personal engraving. The case has average wear for its age but is free of any major scratches, dents or dings. This railroad watch is a nicely priced piece to be added to an important collection or given as a gift.
