SOLD - Antique E. Howard Railroad Chronometer Pocket Watch Series 11 ca.1912
This Howard Railroad Pocket Watch is the most notable Howard, the Series 11. This watch was specifically made for railroad service and Howard was well known for best in craftsmanship. I happen to agree, after seeing hundreds of beautiful railroad watches, many with well decorated movements, this Howard in house movement design is unique among American rail watches; the design, bridges and finishing is oddly more like a high-end Swiss watch. But no worries, Howard was an all American company - I don't even think they exported. E. Howard is accessible, but not that common among railroad watches. I believe it was only about 10 years of producing short runs of high quality pocket watches are documented. Oddly, Hamilton Watch Co. bought the name Howard, it is believed that the purchase of this trade name signaled a collaboration with Hamilton, Howard could benefit by Hamilton's much smaller production costs while Hamilton could use some of the E. Howard watchmaker skills and patents. It appears that the clock segment of their business went their own way and stayed independent. These watches are great investment pieces because they are American low production high-end railroad watches that had some of the best movements in the business. Last service date 4/2019.
