WWII Pocket Watch by Elgin AN-5740 with the very rare U.S. Army A.C. Denotation on the movement size 16s
123 gone...we got a great deal on this pocket watch and as usual, passing is along at a good tick of a discount, I don't expect this piece to be here very long. Let's talk about this very illusive military pocket watch. Used in WWII with a manufacture date of ca.1942, this is a super rare Elgin pocket watch used and issued to U.S. Army Air Commanders according to the best resources I could find. "A.C." was an acronym for many different words and meanings during this time; however, they are all associated with Air Command in some way. Due to the fact that there are little correct examples of this type, you'll find slightly varying opinions on the purpose of this watch; I believe it is similar to a Navy chronometer comparing watch.Unlike many others that may be found, this pocket watch is the complete original package, completely unmolested. The dial has its original factory finish which has darkened slightly to deliver a beautiful even cream patina, which looks amazing as a backdrop to the classic military dial layout. The high end B.W. Raymond 21 jewel movement with 5 adj. is very nicely decorated and makes use of some of the finest American watchmaking, like a gold center wheel, Ball Regulator, and jewels set in gold on the 3/4 plate layout. The movement was serviced March 2019 and is keeping time near modern chronometer specs. These type of watches were typically reserved for railroad approved service watches and keep excellent time when serviced. Our watch, correctly, is stem set and wound instead of being a lever set like a railroad watch. Anyhow, let's sum it up. This Elgin, with a very rare Army designation, is all original, working great, just serviced and ready for any important military and/or pocket watch collection. It would also make an excellent gift for the WWII or Army nerd; or a milestone gift for someone special that served in that war.
