The Hamilton 2974B is among one of the most classic official military issue pocket watch. It's become a Hamilton or Military Watch collector must. The particular piece had seen a lot of Navel service and has likely seen many battles. This is indicated by the amount of wear. You'll notice the 17 jewel adjusted movement in extraordinarily clean and has been recently serviced - keeping good time. The case has significant brassing on the reverse, some on the bail and crown and very little on the obverse. Brassing means that the chrome plate has worn to reveal the brass in which the case is made of. These particular watches have a few different variations regarding how the movement was marked. This piece has two very rare variations. The first is the lack of any government or military markings on the movement, the second is the location of the "Adjusted" printing on the movement; most are not located there. Furthermore, this is a "2K" movement, signifying the 2nd order from the Navy. From experience, I see very little of these which makes me conclude that there were fewer issued. It's because of these details, the watch is rare and significant even with its wear and that's why I love this watch and decided to make it part of our collection. I personally love wear on military pieces; there were so many that were never used. It was ordered by the Bureau of Ships for the purpose of comparing the time to the main deck marine chronometer. Hence, they are referred to as comparing watches. They were synced with a Marine Chronometer and checked to compare the timekeeping to ensure the Marine Chronometer was being accurate. So that's cool and by the way, this watch has a hacking function and is stem wound and set. So when you pull out the crown to set the time, the watch stops immediately to allow for precise setting. That's an unusual complication for a pocket watch but typical for most . military issue watches. This watch made sure the chronometers were keeping time during our Naval battles of WWII. No wonder people want this watch so badly. This is a piece I would buy for my own collection and I am very picky, just ask my wife. Thank you.
