Powered by one of the most reliable automatics, the ETA 2472, this is the legendary Antarctic watch. In time for International Geophysical Year, Nivada supported the US Navy “Operation Deep Freeze” with a durable waterproof, anti-magnetic watch they named “Antarctic”. This would become one of their signature products, alongside the solid Chronomaster Chronograph line. The Antarctic came in a variety of case styles and dials. This watch is a tonneau shaped piece and is all original except for its replacement strap. The watch features the highest waterproofing at the time for this case, with a screw-down system & a date complication. Notice the original factory finish on this watch, very sharp with little wear. The engraving on the reverse is very cool and not as typical as some others. The watch has its original signed crown and original silver dial (not restored in any way). The dial does have some very small paint bubbling likely from sun exposure. It's a flaw small enough to go unnoticed. What really makes this watch special is the original signed crown and very crisp factory finish on the case, which is rarely found. The watch comes on a lightly used vintage light brown genuine leather strap. Here is a nice article about this watch: http://grail-watch.com/2014/03/01/fame-fortune-vintage-watches-worth-others/
