Rare Hampden Grand Dueber Size 18s 17 Jewel Adjusted Chronometer Grade Pocket Watch
A size 18s is harder to find by any watch manufacturer. This case is over 60mm in diameter and quite thick and heavy. Here we have a stunning Grand Dueber Model 1 housed in a classic and large silveroid case. There is little known about these size watches and why they were made. In fact, many pocket watch size charts don't even recognize them. From my research, these were extremely low production and made for the purpose of use on a ship, vessel or boat. Their bulk and sturdiness made them especially suitable for this use. This piece is in very well preserved condition with only a slight chip on the original thick glass crystal at around 12 o'clock being its only noticeable flaw. Like all our Chronometer grade watches, the dial is perfect and has no cracks or hairlines. The watch is running within Chronometer specs and was just overhauled. The serial number dates this to about 1910. Both the obverse and reverse case components are screw down; and based on the threading and how tightly closed this watch can get, I assume it was made to resist water and moisture to a high degree. What makes this piece even rarer, it is stem set instead of lever set - something you usually see on dress pocket watches of this period - but this is surely a utilitarian piece. A logical reason for this would be to keep the watch tightly intact for water resistance not having to open it to set; while its large crown provides extra protection for a stem set watch. Very rare indeed, this would make a wonderful addition to any collection or a gift for a loved one.
