Phenomenal Yellow Gold Filled Case on this Hampden Railway Pocket Watch ca. 1890 Size 18s
If there were a contest for amazing and beautiful pocket watch cases, this piece would get a ribbon pinned on it. We've had the pleasure of handling many beautiful cases over the years, many of them we've never seen again. This case is likely one of those cases you'll not see again, it is a very unusual design. In fact, when trying to figure out the "statement" this design makes, it's tough to really put your finger on it. The winged like design sort of makes me think dragonfly or maybe palm tree. The strategically placed star is cool but strange, makes the piece feel a bit patriotic; but again makes you wonder the meaning behind this odd but stunning design. The case has very little wear on it, the hinged are excellent, all covers (3) snap close tight. This is a full hunter case...the crown is a punch down type that opens the front cover. The movement powering this watch is the illusive Hampden Railway Model 2, an early transitional piece that is tough to find. The watch works great and keeps good time, we serviced this during intake July 2019. The watch is lever set like all railroad approved watches. The model 2 Railway is very high-end, but you really have to look beyond jewel count. The movement is very well finished, has excellent refined decoration, employs solid gold jewel settings and has a uncommon (but very nice) teske regulator. The teske regulation was developed and patented by Hampden, but it was very expensive, which is why we do not see it often. Overall this is an exceptional railroad pocket watch that could be the highlight of any important pocket watch collection or would make an amazing gift he will drool over.
