Jaeger-LeCoultre Rare 18k Yellow Gold Oval Caliber 900 ref. 5002 21 Ultra-Thin Automatic
I was very lucky indeed to find this beautiful and extremely rare Jaeger-LeCoultre Oval caliber 900 ultra-thin high frequency (28,800) automatic which was produced in extremely small numbers in 1979 according to verified sources at JLC. It is an extremely scarce piece. The icing on the cake is that this watch is verified belonging to the late Daniel Mann, a famous movie producer from the 1950s-1980s. This was a presentation piece to Mr. Mann in 1980 from the National Cystic Fibrosis Foundation for his commitment to the support of the foundation. That comes to no surprise given it was known that Mr. Mann was a dedicated donor and ambassador for the foundation. Mr. Mann died in 1991 and this was from the estate. Given the wear on the strap (not the one pictured) when I received it; I gather that this rare JLC was one of Mann's daily wearers. Now back to the watch...The watch is in excellent condition with it's original factory finish in solid 18k yellow gold (not polished) showing average to minimal small surface scratches consistent with its age. The dial is a bright white original factory dial with enameled black roman numerals. The crown is signed and original. Due to its shape, specifically the length, the watch sits fairly large on the wrist for a watch of this era, but the perfect size for a fine Men's dress watch by today's standards at 30mm not including the crown and 32mm not including the lugs; and 40mm from lug to lug end. The caliber 900 is one of the first in-house manufactured automatic ultra-thins of the early master series which is still in production today but using the lower frequency caliber 899. The caliber 900 is not easy to find. My overall assessment of this piece is that it is in excellent condition with minor wear showing. It's stunningly classic like most JLCs and unique at the same time. If you plan on wearing this watch, it's oval shape is a bold fashion move and sets your taste to the eccentric level; however, I will point out that the design is executed with classical features that will never go out of style. From a collectors standpoint, this is obviously one-of-a-kind given the provenance and also an extremely rare model with an estimated 200 made worldwide. The watch comes as seen with a medium brown leather strap and gold tone buckle which is a replacement from it's original strap. Comparable sales without a famous provenance range from $2,000 USD - $5,000 USD and is considered an important watch given the innovative and mastery watchmaking needed to produce a high frequency ultra-thin automatic with a quick set date window to boot. It's my professional opinion that this watch is significantly under valued now and can only appreciate in value.
